Born on February 7, 1974, Steve Nash currently plays the guard position for the Phoenix Suns. He stands 6’3″ tall and weighs 195 lbs. While attending college in Santa Clara, Steve Nash was named as the West Coast Conference Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons. His collegiate basketball career wrapped with him being the Broncos all-time leader in career assists, free throw percentage and 3-pointers made and attempted. In 1993, Steve Nash could be found playing for the Canadian National Team and winning a silver medal. In addition, he played for British Columbia in the 1993 Canada Games, which earned him a bronze medal.
The 1996-1997 season marked the rookie year for Steve Nash. As a rookie, he started only one game but later proved himself after having his 3-point accuracy noted as the second-best ever for a Phoenix Suns rookie. The following season, from 1997 through 1998, Steve Nash worked hard to improve his points per game average and became one of the most improved players in the league. The following year, which marked the 1998-1999 season was trying for Steve Nash, who suffered a lower back injury that caused him to miss the final 10 games of the year. He still managed, however, to play in 40 games and continued to improve his points per game average during those games that he participated in. Yet again, difficulty struck Nash in the 1999-2000 season when an ankle injury took him out of 25 games during the season. He appeared in 56 games that year with 27 starts and an average of 8.6 points per game.
As things began to look up for the youngster, the 2001-2002 proved to be his best ever. During this season, Steve Nash scored an average of 17.9 points per game, which marked a career-high. In addition, he was the only Maverick player to participate and start in all 82 games during the season. Fans who thought the previous years games were plentiful found themselves excited to see another brilliant season from Steve Nash, who ranked third in NBA assists during the 2003-2004 season.
The 2004-2005 NBA season marked great honor for Steve Nash, who joined an elite group of athletes to ever be named as the NBAs Most Valuable Player for the guard position. He was named to the NBA All-Star Team for the third time in his career and finally began to garner the recognition that he had worked so hard to achieve. In 2005-2006, Nash was awarded his second consecutive NBA Most Valuable Player Award.

Deciding when to retire from something you love has to be a difficult decision. Whether you are an athlete, business owner, architect, writer, or sports announcer, the decision to walk away from a life that has defined you for nearly half a decade is certainly not an easy one. That said, no one wants to be the one who is holding on to a position that they are no longer good at, especially in a field that has superior talent waiting in the wings.
Unfortunately there seems to be a trend of those kind of guys in sports casting guys that dont adequately do their jobs but just cant seem to let go, yet are still working because of their reputation, not their current skill (or lack thereof).
The best sports announcers enhance the viewers experience. They can take an ordinary game and make it entertaining. They can take a great game and turn it into one of the most memorable moments in history (Al Michaels and his Miracle on Ice call Do you believe in Miracles…YES! falls into that category).
Good sports announcers give a completely neutral experience they neither enhance nor detract from the moment. They do their jobs but dont give you that extra something special.
Bad announcers on the other hand, can turn the focus of a great game to themselves and their incompetence. A blatantly missed call or a palpably false statement frustrates fans and makes them wonder how they still have a job. Fortunately, most bad announcers dont last very long. But what happens when a great announcer goes bad in old age? Should he be forced to retire or should fans be mercilessly exposed to their ineptitude for years until they decide to leave on their terms?
Keith Jackson is the pre-eminent example of this. Jackson announced his retirement from college football announcing at the end of the 1998, with his last broadcast to have been the 1999 Fiesta Bowl for the National Championship between Tennessee and Florida State. This was the proper decision. At this point he was still revered as the greatest college football announcer ever.
However, he changed his mind the following fall and now does a more limited schedule of games almost exclusively on the West Coast. This past January, Jackson showed how far he has eroded during the National Championship Game between USC and Texas. The game was one of the greatest college football games of all time. Did Jackson enhance the experience as he would have years ago? No. Instead he did the exact opposite. He managed to turn the attention to his own inability to perform his job during a great game.
He brought a lifeless energy, coupled with a series of bloopers and missed calls and a puzzling silence as Vince Young crossed the goal line for the game winning touchdown. He also missed a knee down on a lateral play, which he later attributed to difficulty seeing through his binoculars!
If legends like Jackson and John Madden wont willingly step down on their own, the networks are going to have to make the difficult decision to let them go. There are too many capable play-by-play announcers out there to let these guys continue to ruin broadcasts. I know it will be hard to do, but your audience will thank you.

Project management techniques play an important role in the world around you. Many of the most visually imposing features of your life would not be there without effective project management.
Let us just consider one example: the aircraft.you fly away on for your vacation. That aircraft is an end result of a highly complex project, probably covering several different locations and even countries. Design, engineering, manufacturing; all these could be spread around in different offices and buildings. Each of those elements is complex and may involve several professional disciplines, with safety and comfort a feature at all times.
Take away the management of that aircraft project, and then try to imagine how the resulting aircraft may have looked. Without the co-ordination provided by good management, what you would end up with, if anything, may not even look like an airplane at all. Components may not fit, or may not arrive; the wings may have been designed, but their manufacture not ordered; the wheels may be designed for the wrong size of aircraft. All sorts of bizarre things could occur, and the aircraft would not get off the ground, probably never even be half assembled.
When you get on an aircraft, you are boarding the successful result of a project well and professionally managed. But what if you changed the project from an aircraft to your own future success; and then applied some basic project management techniques to achieve a successful outcome to Project Success? Your chances of achieving success would be greatly enhanced.
You may be thinking that your success is so personal that it is simple, with nobody else involved, and therefore needs no management at all. You may argue that success, if it is going to happen, is just going to happen. The reality of achievement, though, is never that simple. An element of self management will always be needed to be successful, so why not increase your chances of the perfect outcome to Project Success and manage it effectively? After all, you are more complex than that sleek, hi-tech aircraft transporting you to your holiday destination.
In practice, though, how can you take the project management approach of building an aircraft, and apply those techniques to Project Success?
Applying Project Management Techniques to Personal Success.
In a short article, I can only touch upon a few headings which may help guide you to guide yourself. These are important components of managing a project of any sort, and could be applied to Project Success. Here are some ideas which may help put yourself in control of your own success destiny.
Project Success The Vision
Until you have a definite end in mind, you have no project. There would be no point having a project to build an aircraft, only to find in the end that what was needed was a submarine. As an individual, it is just as important to have a clear idea of the end aim; what really is the success you are seeking? Once fully identified, you can plan Project Success.
As an individual, though, this stage can help to pave the way for a smooth project. If you take your time to visualize in some detail what success for you would entail, then you can harvest the benefits of visualization, which can be a useful personal tool in carving an opening to reach where you want to go. One idea is to sit quietly and alone, and visualize your perfect life in 5 years’ time. Then, carefully write down the main components of that future life. You could then take that as your end product of Project Success.
Outline Plan For Project Success
Once you have a clear vision of your overall success objective, then it is worth forming an outline plan of how you are going to achieve that success. At this stage, you may not have much idea of the detail anyway. Even for an outline plan, you may need to do some research first.
For the sake of this illustration, let us assume your vision of success is to have your own business for the first time, based at home and on the internet. This is an ambition shared by millions of people across the world.
Your initial research may show you that, in outline, you need to:
a. choose the type of online business that you want and in what market;
b. learn about website design and building;
c. learn about internet marketing and offline marketing if not already known;
d. study people who have already succeeded in an online business;
e. work out a financial budget;
f. formulate a business plan based on the outcome of a, b, and c above, taking into account e. You conclude d. will be ongoing.
The above are just examples, and not comprehensive, but it is enough to give you a idea of how to get started. There are many methods of project management, which are mostly designed for big projects, but you could also include the following in your Project Success plan:
Consider the Risks
Risk assessment is a normal part of large project, but it can be just as critical for you, especially when it comes to assessing the financial implications and affect on close family. Discuss with your spouse and older children if possible; their support and understanding could be critical later.
Assessing Resources Required
The resources you will need will be a mix of time, free information, free software, paid for software, paid for services and other items of expenditure that are essential to your success. That is based only on your first assessment of what you need to have and to do. Always bear in mind that your personal success project will need to be flexible, as you will learn much as you go along and have to adjust your plan accordingly.
Assigning and Managing Project Tasks
This may sound very simple: assign all tasks to yourself and carry them out yourself. But you are not that simple, and managing yourself is not that simple. In fact, you are are probably about the worse person you could wish to manage, until you train yourself not to be.
While it is possible to contract out tasks, a golden rule of outsourcing is to first understand in detail what it is you are outsourcing. Leave that for later when you are accomplished in your new success role and fully understand the business you are in.
So, to begin with, assign yourself all the tasks, having first listed them all down. You will not have all the resources you need, as you will inevitably be lacking in certain areas of knowledge. Note down what those knowledge gaps are, as filling them will need to be built into a more detailed plan.
Create Detailed Project Plan Task by Task
By now you should have enough information to build a more detailed plan. Now we are not talking about building a rocket here. Despite your own complexities, this should still be a relatively simple plan for each task, and you should be prepared to change it later if necessary. Your plan is intended as an aid to your success, not a ball and chain dragging you down. You will learn fast as you go along, and need to adapt quickly.
Prioritize Project Tasks
In complex projects, progress can be curtailed by bad priority management. I have seen this in practice, when called in to take over the key, time critical, part of a large project installing a new computerised accounting system. I soon realised why it had fallen so far behind. Project team members were, against their own better judgement, being forced into spending time on trivia that the project leader liked doing, rather than driving the key areas of the project forward.
Beware of your own inclination to do the same. In Project Success you will have to manage yourself, according to priorities, but not according to your comfort zone. It is how you respond to this challenge that will dictate whether you will be a successful online businessman, or someone who is just playing with it for fun.
Controlling and Monitoring Progress of “Project Success”.
This is where you will be tested in your own self discipline and management ability. You need to establish points in the plan where you will review progress. In a normal project situation, the project management team would probably have regular management meetings, where those heading each key task have to report progress and co-ordinate with others.
You need to do the same, as yourself, and perhaps review progress once a week or, at minimum, once a month. If you can get a mentor in your chosen business, then that would be a great help; or you may like to get your spouse or a friend to add a critical input to your progress. The important thing is that you must make an unemotional assessment of how you are progressing, where things are going right or wrong, and what, if any, changes to the plan need to be made. A plan is a plan is a plan; change it if you have to, and do not think of changing it as an admittance of defeat, it is a triumph of actual knowledge over guesswork.

I was looking for ways to make extra money, but didn’t want the usual jobs. Being just twenty one at the time, I was willing to try almost anything. So when my brother’s towing business got a contract to repossess cars, I was ready to be a “repo man.” Soon I was prowling in the night with my brother, looking for and legally “stealing” cars.
He could only pay for each car we took, so we had a lot of motivation to find them and get them. At various times we were chased by a crowd, had the window of the tow truck pulled out, and had a guns pulled on us. It was fun at the time, but the following are some less dangerous ways to make extra money.
Selling Things To Make Extra Money
Camping at a desert hot spring one winter, my wife and I met a man who sold used stuffed animals on the side of the highway. He buys the stuffed animals at thrift stores. At first, he even got the stores to give him the animals, with the agreement that he would return with the money or the animals the next week.
Some small towns sell a vendor’s permit cheaply ($18/year, for example). Otherwise he just set up his stand until he was chased out of the county. He was never fined, and claims he sold $4,000 worth his first month. Perhaps he was exaggerating, but because of him we sold used stuffed animals in our flea market stands with some success.
Walking sticks were a better seller. One summer I sold over a thousand dollars worth alongside our other items. I made them quickly, adding handgrips made from recycled leather jackets. They cost about 50 cents to make, and sold for $6 to $26.
While at the flea markets, we discovered why so many people were pulling things out of the piles of stuff on the curbs of our town during spring clean-up. People throw away good radios, furniture, toys and more. Others run around gathering it up to clean and sell at flea markets. It cost them gas for the car or truck, and usually around $10 per day for a spot at the market.
Business Investing To Make Extra Money
I used to put up the cash to buy cars for a couple different friends. They knew cars, I had cash. My brother saw a repossessed truck for sale for $900, for example, and knew it was worth at least $2000. I put up the money, the truck sold for $2100, netting us $900 after expenses. We split the profit. $450 on a $900 investment in ten days is a decent return.
An acquaintance of mine used to find fantastic buys on used restaurant equipment. If he had looked for more than just what he needed for his little coffee shop, he could have easily made a few hundred dollars extra money each week, just buying and quickly reselling ovens, coolers and display cases.
As my own example shows, you don’t need to know much about the value of things to make money investing in them for resale. You just have to know someone who does know enough. Then you just put up the money and collect your share of the profits. This has to be one of the easier ways to make extra money.

Missing home and the various other things that were important to you before you left is normal and is part of the transition into a new country and new culture. It can be especially hard if the culture of the country you have moved to is really different to what you were used to.
In the first few months or even the first year, you may feel as if you have lost your identity. Having this state of mind can amplify the feelings of missing home. Back home, people knew you and knew your personality. It may feel like you have to rebuild your identity. In some respects you have to, but it is important to remember why you moved to a new country in the first place. Maybe you wanted a fresh start in life. Grasp the opportunity this fresh start has given you. You could even give your personality a makeover and be someone new.
Dealing with missing home, friends and family can be made that much easier, but it takes effort. One of the important aspects you can do is to plan. Plan to make calls to friends and loved ones. Plan not to be alone. Don’t let yourself be alone too much as this is not good for your morale. Invite the new friends you make to spend time with you. Arrange for your family and friends back home to come and visit as much as possible. By being proactive and planning, you will have something to look forward to and this helps with the thoughts of missing home.
In this modern age of communications, there are many ways to keep in touch. Telephone, email, Internet chat and even via web cam video. Grasp the technology and get it working in your favour. You may feel that you are missing out on things at home, but imagine what a video of your nieces birthday party would do for you. Sure it would probably make you miss home, but you would still feel very much a part of what is happening back home and have not been forgotten.
Learn to fit in with the new culture you have found yourself in. Forget that back home you would celebrate Christmas like this, or would eat this on a Sunday. You are not at home so learn to live like the locals. Once you accept that the world around you is different, maybe then you will learn to live with it and feel part of something again. Perhaps that is when you can start to deal with missing home.
Missing home is difficult to overcome, but with effort, friends, a social life and enthusiasm to fit into this new life, it can be easier to deal with.

After a couple of pints he went up to the bar to order himself a drink. Unfortunately he could not speak all of the words fluently and the bar man accused him of being drunk and refused to serve him. He tried to explain that he was not drunk but had a stutter but the bar man said “That’s what they all say”
He returned to his friends who asked him where his drink was. He told them what had happened, this itself was very embarressing.
This is a typical situation people who have a stutter find themselves in.

Now that I have overcome a stutter it is like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders and life is so much easier.

Are you intrigued or surprised by the way I titled this article? It probably seems like writing obituaries would be filled with anything other than joy. I agree, or at least I would have agreed up until a few months ago when I had the privilege of helping two friends write the obituaries for their grandmothers.
I used to think that writing obituaries would be a thing of dread, filled with nothing but morbid thoughts of how a loved one would no longer be around to share life with you. I was sure that writing obituaries was never a healthy, healing thing for a person to do. My two friends changed my views of all of this. I sat with my two friends at our favorite coffee shop as they determined to write appropriate obituaries for their grandmothers who had ironically died within a week of each other. I ordered everyone lattes and joined my friends with a bit of reservation about what the next hours would hold. I think I was there for moral support, to grab a Kleenex if I saw a tear or to order another drink if more caffeine was needed. I sat quietly and watched as they began to write the obituaries that many people would read to grieve and remember the women who had passed on.
Minutes passed quickly until we had been in the coffee shop for three hours. I was nearly in shock over all I had observed and learned during that time. Rather than being filled with an endless stream of tears, our hours were filled with tons of laughter. My two friends were looking at the task of writing the obituaries with joy and gratefulness. They were glad to have been the ones in their families chosen for the task and they threw themselves in to the work fully.
For both of them, writing obituaries for their grandmothers was a privilege. They enjoyed the opportunity to wander back through years of memories and special moments shared with their grandmas. Their grieving was overshadowed only by the joy of remembering. This was a lesson that I needed to learn. I never thought about writing obituaries as an opportunity to honor a loved one and find joy, peace and healing in the process, but that is exactly what my two friends did that afternoon.
So now, as I sit down to write obituaries for my own loved ones who have passed, I do it with joy. I do it to remember the best parts of who they were and the many ways that they influenced my life for the better. It may sound a little silly, but writing obituaries isn’t something I mind doing at all.

Does your company have an email policy? Did you even know there was such a thing?? Well, there is, and if your company doesnt have one you are not only risking the professional image of your firm, but also risking potential liability issues that may arise from the misuse of your company email system.
Having a published email policy accomplishes three objectives.
First, it teaches your employees how to use email in a professional manner. Whats that? Youve never really given much thought about the emails your employees send out? Well, you should, because ill-composed and unprofessional emails not only reflect on the employee, but on you and your company, as well.
Chances are most of your employees dont even spell check the emails they send to your customers and partners. Chances are even greater that they are sending other items through your company email system that may get you sued.
Consider this: if one of your male employees sends an email to a female employee that might be considered harassing in nature, you may be judged to be just as liable for damages when her attorney comes calling with harassment suit in hand.
Creating a company email policy also helps lay out the ground rules for personal use of company email. When an employee is on your clock, using your computer equipment, and your network, and your resources they should understand that personal emails should not be sent or received using the company email system.

Once the policy is written it should be distributed to employees and can even become part of future employment contracts. Good luck seems like random fortunate coincidences, but there are things we do that cause more of what we call “luck,” both good and bad. Usually, we don’t know we are doing these things, but what if we did? Could we then create luck?
Yes. Actually, there are at least seven specific techniques you can use to generate more good luck. This article is about just one of those techniques, one of the easiest ones. It is simply choosing to recognize the luck you already have, until your mind is trained to do this automatically.
Recognize Good Luck
Once, when I bought a particular car, I suddenly began to see the same model all over. The other cars had always been there, of course, but now I was noticing them, because my mind was “tuned into” that model. Perhaps you’ve had a similar experience. This is how our brains work. We see more of whatever we are looking for or “tuned into”, and this is true with luck too. Just look for it, and you’ll see more of it.
Why does “seeing” your luck matter? For two important reasons. The first is that you’ll feel better when you start noticing the ways in which you are lucky. Counting your “blessings” brings a sense of gratitude that is good for your soul, even if you’re not religious. The psychology of this process is real regardless, so this is a brain training exercise for a better life.
The second reason is that when you start recognizing the luck you have, and watching for more, you’ll notice that you “get lucky” more often. It won’t be your imagination. Yes, you will actually have more good luck, and there is a logical explanation for this.
Create Good Luck
People may tell you that God or the universe blesses you when you have gratitude in your heart. This is a nice thought, but it’s not my style. My more scientific explanation is that when you acknowledge luck, and habitually look for more, you create a certain frame of mind. This frame of mind helps you take advantage of opportunities you might otherwise miss.
Here is a personal example: One day y brother mentioned that he’s making money from simply hanging advertisements on his websites. Since I had no interest in the internet at the time, I might have just said “That’s nice,” and let it go at that. However, my mind is in the habit of looking for good luck, so I asked a few questions. A year and a half later, I’m making a good living writing about topics like this.
You have probably heard the saying; “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” This perfectly describes the frame of mind of a lucky person. When you recognize how lucky you are, even in small ways, it makes the possibility of good luck more real to you. This, in turn, gets you watching, and the watching gets you thinking, “How can I make lemonade from these lemons? How is this lucky for me? Where is my good luck in this situation?”

Susan Daley was a successful entrepreneur selling promotional products. She enjoyed making decent money while having the flexibility to work at home. Susan recently took over a colleagues account, a huge growth opportunity. So why did she spend her mornings playing solitaire in her messy office rather than making phone calls to prospects?
To procrastinate is to put off doing something, or to postpone or delay needlessly. Sometimes we avoid doing the tasks that must be done because they are unpleasant or boring, or because we have poor time management skills or are lazy. And yet, often it is the tasks we most want to do that we put off, resulting in much internal pressure.
In Susans case, she loved building relationships with potential clients, helping them to better serve their customers and employees, and making a good paycheck to support her family.
So what was going on?
Awareness is the first step. Think about your excuses for not accomplishing your goals. Everyone has his or her own pattern of procrastinating. Here are eight examples:
- Fear of change, rejection or failure
- Need to be perfect (I cant do it perfectly so I wont start)
- Lack of time
- Too much stress, pressure or anxiety which leads to paralysis
- Overwhelm on how to start (task is too big, dont know how to do it, etc.)
- Self-doubt or lack of confidence
- Disorganization, indecision
- Other priorities, big (work/family crisis) and little (need to check email first!)
Do these excuses sound reasonable and logical? Thats often the case. The problem is that if you buy into the excuses, you dont follow-through on the steps needed to achieve your goals. Procrastination can feel good in the moment, but then creates stress. This becomes a vicious cycle.
Overcoming Procrastination

Getting into action alleviates the stress of procrastination almost instantaneously.
Here are the five simple steps:
1. Identify the task to be done
2. Identify the first or next step to accomplish the task
3. Commit to a time when you will begin the first step
4. Be aware of your pattern of excuses
5. BUT begin the first step in collaboration with the excuses
Susan outlined the steps needed to organize her files and her office to have ready access to client information. She set daily and weekly goals for contacting prospects and clients. Working with a coach provided the structure and accountability to stay in action on these tasks. She developed strategies to counteract the fear of rejection that was fueling some of the procrastination.
Dont worry about eliminating all the excuses, or analyzing too much why you are procrastinating. Getting into action actually reduces the grip of the inertia and overwhelm of procrastination. As Susan found, it can be helpful to have partners and strategies to keep the excuses at bay.
Youll feel more confident and relaxed as you experience the success of reaching your goals. You gain momentum and if you begin the task again and again, you WILL ultimately achieve it.

Between diminishing factory orders and increasing labor and energy costs, companies that use plate metal in their fabricating processes are finding their profit margins increasingly pinched.
Yet, manufacturers must still invest in new production equipment — whether to replace obsolete equipment or to take advantage of new business opportunities — in order to remain competitive.
Manufacturers must make careful assessments when evaluating the addition of new plate-rolling equipment. Debt capital is still available to purchase new machinery, but paying back the loan will not yield a satisfactory return on investment unless the equipment adds value to the production. Unfortunately, many buyers end up purchasing equipment that lacks the capability and flexibility to meet production volumes and tolerances, simply because they don’t understand all available options and considerations.
In an effort to help manufacturers optimize plate rolling operations, 5 key considerations are offered in order to choose a proper plate bending machine.
1. Factor in the properties of the material to be rolled
Even though drawings call for a plate to be rolled down to the same dimensions, a tougher material will require a much higher-rated rolling machine. In absence of such considerations, defects will result and the manufacturer will end up with excessive scrap.
Today’s steel is much stronger and requires more strength to bend. Thanks to detailed classifications by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, countless varieties of steel abound: A36, A516 grade 70, Hardox 400/500 series and AR 200/300 series, for example. And these different steels require varying pressures to roll.
A metal’s temper and yield strength must be matched with the customer’s application to correctly determine the specifications of the plate roller. This is especially important since steel characteristics have changed drastically over the past couple of decades. What was once known as mild steel no longer exists.
2. Work with an equipment dealer that is willing to discuss your specific plate-rolling needs
Customers must know the correct questions to ask, in order to get the correct answers. Each manufacturer faces unique challenges, and through systematic querying an astute sales representative can determine exactly what equipment will work best for their process.
Manufacturers must also carefully consider whether they wish to roll conical or parabolic shapes to take advantage of a broader market. Hydraulically operated four-roll machines are ideal for this type of work by eliminating surface scarring, thereby decreasing the need for grinding the lamination (bullnosing) on the minor diameter edge of a cone.
Accurate conical rolling is further achieved through features such as torsion bar parallelism, as opposed to electronic systems or proportional value systems that merely maintain a theoretical balance. Finite parallelism allows the machine to be adjusted to its full conical tilt and back to parallel in only five seconds.
Customers need to discuss issues such as inside diameters, material type, tolerances and the desired shape of the finished product. As an example, some products, such as those found in the pressure vessel industry, demand a maximum of 1 percent out-of-round on their diameters or they are considered defective. By using an underpowered plate roller, too much of a barrel effect can render such a product useless and quickly erase any potential profit margin.
Matching plate-rolling equipment to the specific needs of a manufacturer requires attention to detail. It is imperative that the dealer you work with is willing to sit down with you and discuss the specific needs of your business. There are many issues that need to be addressed, many of which a purchasing manager may not initially foresee.
3. Stay within ideal operating parameters of the machine
It is recommended that manufactures identify what material and what thickness represent their highest volume of work. Then (a company) can deliver a machine that will camber to that specification, thus conserving valuable production hours and eliminating large amounts of scrap.
Quality rolling machines are usually cambered at 50 percent of the full-rated value of the machine. Hence, a 1-inch machine is cambered to roll 1/2-inch plate at a nearly perfect edge.
Disregarding this important fact can result in out-of-spec product that the customer will not accept. Problems most commonly arise when rollers attempt to push the upper limits of their plate roll. If 5/8-inch plate is rolled through a 1-inch-rated machine, a small degree of barrel effect will likely occur. This may or may not be an acceptable margin for error.
However, when plate thickness approaches the upper end of a machine’s rating, then severe defects can occur. Unless corrected with a shim, it will not be sellable. Conversely, when very thin material is rolled through a machine rated for very thick plate, the finished product may come out tighter in the center than at the ends. Again, time consuming shimming is necessitated to correct for this “hourglass” effect.
4. Carefully consider bending diameters
The tighter the diameter, the more bend pressure required. For instances where thick material must be rolled into tight inside diameters (ID), the diameter of the top roll and the layout of the machine can make the difference between a product whose cylindrical edges meet and one that won’t close.
As a rule of thumb, most machines can roll plate at 1 1/2 times the upper roll diameter. Hence, given a 10-inch-diameter top roll, inside diameters as tight as 15 inches can be obtained. However, new machines that incorporate planetary guides are able to keep approximately 50 percent more area of the plate under bend-pressure during the rolling operation, thereby achieving ratios of 1.1 times the upper roll diameter. This creates a 30 percent advantage on tight diameters.
All machines achieve precise measurements at 50 percent of the full-rated value. Therefore, given a 1.1 roll geometry, a 3/8-inch machine with a 10-inch top roller can consistently roll 3/16-inch plate to 11-inch ID without any barrel defect.
5. Incorporate both side and vertical supports to prevent unwanted bends
Adequate support requires both side and vertical roller-supports, as designed by the manufacturer of the plate-rolling machine. Once employed, plate rolling becomes a one-man job instead of two. This frees up valuable manpower that can be re-routed to other jobs.
When rolling a cylinder, once the inside diameter is more than 200 times greater than the thickness of the material, the weight of the material becomes sufficient to bend the cylinder as it exits the top roll and gets further away from the machine. Without proper support, unwanted radii result.
Purchasing a machine with both side and vertical roller supports easily solves this problem.Some manufacturers attempt to skimp on this ancillary equipment by resorting to “makeshift” support such as a forklift or overhead crane. However, this shortcut ties up the use of equipment that can best be utilized elsewhere. Because it cannot adequately support the material, unforeseen bends can still appear.
